  • Among high school seniors, whites are most likely and blacks least likely to be heavy drinkers.
  • In 2009, the Monitoring the Future Survey reported that 37% of 8th graders and 72% of 12th graders had tried alcohol, and 15% of 8th graders and 44% of 12th graders drank during the past month.
  • When chronic heavy drinkers that took place in a government sponsored study substituted alcohol for carbohydrates in their diets, they were reported to lose weight and to weigh less than their nondrinking counterparts; additionally, when chronic heavy drinkers added alcohol to an otherwise normal diet, they did not appear to gain weight.
  • "Social use" of alcohol consists of an occasional drink in the company of friends: a glass of champagne at a wedding, a cold beer after a softball game, or a glass of fine wine with a meal; social drinking has not been shown to kill brain cells, nor is there any research that indicates that occasionally having an alcoholic beverage adversely affects any major body organ.
