- Obstetricians and other health care providers are beginning to be trained to assess all women's drinking behavior during prenatal visits; this assessment can open the door for clinicians to counsel women more intensely about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
- Women are less able to predict the effects of consuming a given amount of alcohol, because greater susceptibility to alcohol occurs prior to menstruation.
- Family members and love ones of alcoholics often try to protect the person from the results of his or her behavior by making excuses to others or by getting the person out of alcohol-related jams; the alcoholic will never be sufficiently motivated to stop drinking, unless they are allowed to fully experience the harmful effects of his or her drinking.
- The alcoholic family's home environment and the way that family members interact may contribute to the risk for the problems observed among children of those alcoholics.
