People who can drink heavily without becoming intoxicated have probably developed a tolerance for alcohol, which can indicate the onset of dependency.
Heavy drinking can also cause brain damage, high blood pressure and an enlarged heart; additionally, high alcohol intake can cause potentially deadly diseases of the liver and pancreas.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Use (NHSDU), among high school seniors, Caucasians are more likely than African Americans to be heavy drinkers.
