  • Physical changes that are commonly associated with the aging process can make older people feel "high" even after drinking small amounts of alcohol. So even if there is no medical reason to avoid alcohol, older men and women should consider limiting themselves to one to two drinks per day.
  • All states in the United States have adopted 0.08% (80 mg/dL) as the legal limit of alcohol consumption for operating a motor vehicle for drivers aged 21 years or older. However, drivers younger than 21 are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle with any level of alcohol in their system.
  • It is estimated that about 17% of men and about 8% of women will meet criteria for alcohol dependence at some point in their lives.
  • Among high school seniors, whites are most likely and blacks least likely to be heavy drinkers.
