- An individual who reaches for alcohol every day as a way to relax or as a way to self medicate or to relieve stress is at risk for developing an alcohol addiction; an example of this is the individual who has a drink every time they have an argument with their spouse or boss.
- Research has shown that children from alcoholic families report higher levels of depression and anxiety and exhibit more symptoms of generalized stress (i.e., low self-esteem) than do children from nonalcoholic families.
- Vomiting is part of the body's automatic defense system that is activated in order to prevent more alcohol from being absorbed.
- Alcohol is typically found in the offender, victim or both in about half of all homicides and serious assaults, as well as in a high percentage of sex-related crimes, robberies, and incidents of domestic violence, and alcohol-related problems are disproportionately found among both juvenile and adult criminal offenders.
